It's hard to put into words the impact my Grandma has had on my life, and I know I'll carry her words and the times we spent together with me for the rest of my life. She and my Grandpa were both a big part of my life as a child, and even though they moved from Michigan to Florida, we maintained a strong relationship in the years after. Though I've been surrounded by a strong group of family and friends for most of my life it's hard to imagine people more sincerely caring and generous than the two of them.
My grandmother's charisma is difficult to describe to anyone who has never met her. It was a disarming blend of youthfulness, wisdom, wittiness, and generosity unlike anything I've ever known, and probably will never know again. She was an amazing story teller who I could listen to for hours without being bored, and regardless of the time period she was telling me about, it always seemed relevant to me. Like there was always something I could be taking from her words to apply to my own life.
Her life itself is a remarkable story that covered many landmark moments in our country's history. It started in a small town run by a coal company in Benham, Kentucky, where my great grandfather was a miner. She lived through the Great Depression and her family experienced difficult times after moving to a farm in Parlor Grove, Kentucky. She and my grandfather spent the years during World War II in Texas on a military base where he worked as a cook in the Army. Afterwards they migrated to Michigan to raise their children and live a better life than they had ever known before. Overall, it's hard for me to fathom the changes and historic moments she witnessed in her lifetime. But still, I think she never forgot her modest beginnings and the times where her family struggled to make ends meet. I say this because of her uncompromising desire to give to others in whatever way she could, and her tenacity to overcome whatever situation she was presented with.
Although I heard her tell me many times the things in her life that she wished she had done differently, or the opportunities she wished she had been given, Grandma was anything but a passive bystander. She embraced even the routine aspects of her life with an imaginative and playful passion, and made an impact on everyone around her. She lived for her family, but she would just as soon go out of her way to do whatever she could for a complete stranger in need.
I have countless memories of the creative and funny things she did to keep me happy and entertained in all of the times I spent at my grandparents' house as a child: sewing me miniature potatoes out of old nylons to go with my farm toys, playing baseball with me on a hot summer day, letting me beat her in Monopoly about a thousand times, cooking peach cobblers with me, picking sour cherries off the tree in the backyard, firing blank shells on the revolver she kept in her nightstand...they go on and on. As I became an adult and her age caught up with her I still loved the time I got to spend with her, listening to her tell me wild stories about our family from when she was a teenager, or looking through old photo albums together. She had a story to tell about everyone, her memory was remarkable.
I think that everyone in our family had been anticipating her last days for quite a while now, my grandpa died in 2000, and I'm not sure any of us expected her to outlive him for this long. It was hard on her, and she experienced some difficult health problems that took their toll on her both physically and emotionally. But regardless of what befell her - and I can not stress this enough - her spirit could not be crushed. She never lost her faith in God, never forgot her love for her family, and never lost the ability to find joy in simple things, like eating fast food fried chicken with my Dad after she nearly died from complications related to her hip replacement surgery.
Is that the best we can do in this life? I don't know. It may be.
Another thing I can thank her for is my desire to have a family of my own. I honestly

I visited Aunt Ola about two weeks ago. She was cheerful and we chatted about several things. When I started to leave she stood and hugged me. I began to let go but she didn't. She held on a little while longer. I said, I love you. She said, I love you too. And I knew it to be true as I have known it to be true my whole life. I will miss this spunky lady very much and will keep her in my heart always.
