Obituary of William Wayne Steiner

Dr. William Wayne Steiner passed away on August 6, 2011, surrounded by family, in The Villages, Florida. "Doc", as he was known to everybody, was born in Justus, Ohio. His family moved to Louisville, Ohio when he was a teenager. While attending Louisville High School, he lettered in four different varsity sports. He went on to attend Mount Union College, graduating in 1942. He attended Officers Training School at Notre Dame and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He served with distinction in the Atlantic theatre, including the Normandy invasion where he made multiple crossings of the English Channel under fire. After the war, he entered the Western Reserve School of Dentistry, graduating in 1950. During the Korean Conflict, he was called back to service and served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. After completing his service, he moved back to Louisville, along with his new wife, Nancy, and entered private dental practice. He served thousands of Louisville residents for the next 37 years until his retirement in 1991. Doc Steiner believed fervently in his responsibility to serve his community. He was a member of the Louisville Board of Education for many years, serving as President of the Board. He also served as President of the Stark County Dental Association. He was subsequently appointed by the Governor of Ohio to the Ohio State Dental Board and eventually served as President of the State Board, as well. His passion for excellence in dentistry was matched by his passion for woodworking and golf. Over many years, he designed and built from scratch multiple award-winning pieces of furniture, rivaling any of the designer makes. He also became a scratch senior golfer, winning many trophies and competitions. His most recent championship was won at The Villages course at the age of 87. With all of his accomplishments, his family and friends will best remember his steadfast loyalty, his never ending smile and his incredible devotion to his family. Doc proved beyond any doubt that one does not have to be famous to be great. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy L.(Covert) of The Villages, Florida; his son William II (Janet) of Shaker Heights, Ohio; daughters Kathi Kole (Bruce) of The Villages, Florida and Tracy Noll (Bruce) of Bay Village, Ohio; and seven grandchildren, Ryan, Joshua, Brian, Adam, B.J., Michael and Diana. Service will be held at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home, The Villages, Florida on August 20, 2011 at 2:00 PM. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Internment will be at Bushnell National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. Family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to Cornerstone Hospice, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, Florida, 32162. Condolences may be left at www.hiers-baxley.com.
