Elmer P. Wimmer, Jr., 91, of Ocala, Florida, passed away at E.W. & Lucille Cate’s Hospice House on June 23, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born August 31, 1929, the son of the late Elmer P. Wimmer Sr. and Helen Bright Wimmer. Elmer was a native of Sharon, Pennsylvania before moving to the Ocala area from Hinsdale, Illinois in 1986. On August 1, 1953, Elmer married Irene A. Ruffo and together they shared almost 70 years. Elmer was a graduate of Sharon High School, Class of 1948. He had a successful career in sales as a leasing agent with General American Transportation Corporation (GATX), in Sharon, Pennsylvania and Chicago, Illinois. Following retirement in 1984, he and Irene were able to spend many years traveling. Elmer was a very generous person and gave countless hours as a volunteer firefighter with the Hinsdale Fire Department. He was a hospital volunteer for 25 years at Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital in Hinsdale, Illinois. He then volunteered an additional 30 years (10,781 hours) at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida. Elmer was also a 32 Degree Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; son, Scott A. Wimmer (Pam) and daughter, Amy (Tony) Cox.
He is predeceased by his parents.
A memorial service for Elmer will be held at 6:00pm on Monday, June 28 at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services (9695 SW 110th Street, Ocala, FL 34481). A gathering will take place from 5:00pm until the time of the service.
