Larry Schorfhaar

Obituary of Larry J. Schorfhaar

Larry J. Schorfhaar, 90, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021 with his wife, Boots, at his side. Larry was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Mikado, Michigan fishing the lakes, streams and rivers and hunting the woods with his Uncle Hank. He attended the Limerick School in Mikado and later Oscoda High School. After high school his family moved to Florida where he met then married his wife in McIntosh, Florida and started a family. Larry spent his working years as a finish carpenter working on projects large and small all over Marion County as well as the surrounding counties. In his spare time he began to make guitars, hammer dulcimers, lap dulcimers, violins, mandolins, Irish bouzoukis and once even a Hurdy-Gurdy. For over 40 years he and his wife displayed the instruments at FAFO in Ocala and other art fairs around Florida, winning numerous awards for his craftsmanship. Along with his artistry, Larry thrilled and delighted his family and friends with his dry sense of humor and stories of his youthful adventures and misadventures. They all have their favorite “Larry” story.

Larry was predeceased by his parents, George Schorfhaar and Betty Schorfhaar McKoone, brother, Roy Schorfhaar, and son, Kenneth Schorfhaar. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Norma “Boots” Schorfhaar, his grandson, Dallas Schorfhaar and great grandson, Bennett Schorfhaar as well as a host of Schorfhaar cousins, Thames nieces and nephews and many friends.

A small private service will be held in McIntosh, Florida at a later date. In lieu of a memorial service it is hoped that Larry’s friends and family share their favorite “Larry” story on the Hires-Baxley website.
