Obituary of Chandreka Maharaj

Mr. Chandreka “Kalli” Maharaj passed peacefully in his home on the morning of April 5th, 2021 surrounded by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren at the age of 77.

 

Kalli is survived by his wife, Chandra; daughter Vashti Nugent (Brian), son Vijay (Sherry), and daughter Kala. Grandchildren: Meera, Mala, Krishna, Jasmine, and Ravi.

 

Kalli was born on January 4th, 1944 in Tableland, Trinidad W.I. to Hari Kallicharan Maharaj and Dularie Dassaw. He graduated from Pace University NYC in 1979 with a Bachelor’s degree in business. Kalli married Chandra (his sweetheart), on April 11th, 1965 in Trinidad W.I.

 

After Kalli immigrated to New York, New York in 1967 by himself to create a better life for his family, he enlisted in the US Army. He was called to service in July 1969, and was sent overseas to Korea in 1970. The family resided in Brooklyn, New York while Kalli continued to work for Stars and Stripes (army newspaper) in Manhattan, New York until 1981.

 

Kalli and his family moved to Citra, Florida in 1981 where they established a family business - “Kalli’s Service Center” which is where the legacy began. Kalli also served his community with the Sheriff’s Department of Marion County.

 

Kalli was a wonderful, hardworking provider for his family. He was the true example of a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He valued family above all. Kalli was a pillar of the community in both the Hindu faith as a pundit and an entrepreneur. Kalli was an inspiration and a mentor to many. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

 

Kalli’s funeral service is scheduled for 10 am on April 9th, 2021 at Heirs Baxley Ocala, FL: 910 East Silver Springs Boulevard Ocala, FL 34471. All are welcome to attend and celebrate his life with us. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to https://gofund.me/89d560cf. COVID-19 protocols are in place with regards to social distancing and masks are preferred.

 

The family would like to thank first and foremost the community - for all the love, support, and outreach. As well as the excellent caretakers at the VA in Gainesville, Florida and Hospice of Marion County.
