James Yancey

Obituary of James Yancey

James Yancey transitioned from this life due to COVID on January 21, 2021.  He was 90 years old.  James was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on September 18, 1930 and moved to Ocala in 1945.  He was a graduate of Ocala High School, class of 1947.   James was predeceased by his parents, James Yancey and Alpha Yancey Kennedy, as well as three siblings, Betty Phillips, Margaret Harper, and Robert Yancey.

James is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara Mooney Yancey, and his children:  Stephanie Yancey Phelan (Dude), James Russell Yancey (Lori), and Robert Carl Yancey (Patti).  He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

James was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force having served during the Korean War era.  He loved his God, his family and his country.  Many, many happy days were spent at family picnics hosted at the Yancey home on Lake Weir Avenue.  He was quite the accomplished grill master.

Most of James’ working life was spent in the car business; for which he had a passion.  Among other venues, James was a valued salesman at Turnipseed Chevrolet and at Dingman Pontiac Cadillac.  In later years James was privileged to work for the Marion County Clerk’s Office.

Yardwork was a favorite hobby for James and Barbara; their yard truly was a showplace.  James also enjoyed NASCAR, all things automotive, getting together with his high school classmates, and of course, Gator football.

James was kind, steadfast, honest, genuine and fun loving.  But, above all else, he was a committed Christian.  He was among the longest tenured members of First Methodist Church of Ocala having become a member in 1950.  James’ family takes comfort knowing that he is now at home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

There will be a viewing at Hiers Funeral Home from 12:00 to 1:00 on Wednesday, January 27th and a graveside service at 2:00 at Highland Memorial Park.   Due to COVID restrictions, social distancing will be carefully observed.
