George Colvin, Jr.

Obituary of George Robert Colvin, Jr.

George Robert “Bob” Colvin, Jr., 83 of The Villages, Florida, passed away peacefully in his home on November 23, 2018.

Bob was born on July 15th, 1935, in Watertown, NY to the late George Robert Colvin, Sr., and the late Mary (Murtaugh) Colvin.  Bob is preceded in death by his son Mark Colvin; and brother Roy Colvin.

Bob is survived by his beloved  wife of 55 years Ilse Benje Colvin; children Roger Colvin (Jackie), Columbia, MD, Robert “Andy” Colvin, Columbia, MD; Heide-Marie Burgess, Wilmington, NC; grandchildren Caitlin Colvin, Alexandra Colvin-McNeeley, Maiah Colvin, Justin Burgess, and Chloe Burgess; great grandchild Carson Chamblee.

Bob spent much of his youth on his family’s farm in Oakton, VA.  He attended Gonzaga College High School, and George Washington University both in Washington, DC.  Bob spent most of his working years as a successful business owner in Washington, DC.  Included in Bob’s business endeavors were Columbia Business Solutions, Capital Cuts in the Eastern Market, and a Real Estate Holding company.  Bob and Ilse retired to The Villages in 2005, after raising their family in Columbia, MD.  Prior to this Bob gave three years to the service of his country serving in the US Army.

Bob was an avid reader and student of life with history and politics being his passion. Throughout his life, Bob was an enthusiastic golfer until his illness slowed him down.  Bob enjoyed traveling on oceans, rivers, and land.  He was a connoisseur of culinary arts, both creating and eating.  He loved entertaining friends and family and found much pleasure in introducing guests to his delectable creations.

Bob was happiest, however, when he could travel the globe with Ilse.  Bob wanted to experience as much of the world’s diverse cultures and people as was possible.  Of course, tasting local food was always a priority for him.  Bob instilled these same passions in his children and grandchildren by exposing them to the beauties and wonders of the world in which we live.  Bob made his final voyage across the Atlantic Ocean just six months prior to passing.

Bob will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, his kindness and compassion for all living beings, his love for learning and pleasing others, and for his incredible strength, leaving this world with a beautiful story to tell.    Bob will be greatly missed.

A celebration of his life will take place on Friday, November 30th 2:30 PM at HIERS-BAXLEY Funeral & Cremation Life Event Center, 3975 Wedgewood Lane, The Villages, FL  32162.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care, Rt. 466 in The Villages, FL.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Cornerstone for their devotion and care they provided throughout Bob’s illness.  Sentiments may be left online at www.hiers-baxley.com.
