Obituary of Joan de Hechavarria

Joan de Hechavarria, 88, of Ocala, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Sunday morning, July 8, 2018.  Joan was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Henry and Lucia Nielsen and moved to Ocala from Jacksonville, FL some 30 years ago.  Joan enjoyed breeding race horses, and golfing, and tennis.  She was the first female board member of Bacardi Ltd.  She also was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church.  Joan was an active member of Deerwood Country Club in Jacksonville, FL, and Hyannisport Club in Hyannis Port, MA.   She was a well loved and respected central figure of her whole family.

 

Survivors include her husband of 63 years Luis de Hechavarria, children Annie and husband Hans Scott of Ocala, FL, Luis “Wicho” and wife Georgette de Hechavarria of Jacksonville, FL, Susan and husband James Whelan of Dover, MA, and Paul and wife Courtney de Hechavarria of Ocala, FL, 8 grandchildren; Jimmy, Chris, Niki, Ashley, Gigi, James, Ella, and Claire.

 

Funeral services will be private, with burial at Highland Memorial Park in Ocala.
