Obituary of Rosemary Orton

Rosemary Orton, 83, formerly of Hamburg, NY and Akron, OH died Monday March 12, 2018.  Rosemary was a retired teacher, Meals on Wheels Site Manager and Mercy Hospital Foundation Staff Member.  She taught 13 years in Ohio and 25 years in New York, retiring in 1994 after a 38 year career.  She acquired Bachelors and Master’s Degrees in education and certifications as School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS) and School District Administrator(SDA).  During her tenure, she earned the reputation of helping academically challenged children acquire “excellence in learning” Miss Orton was nominated for the Excellence in Teaching award in 1990.

While teaching, Miss Orton served as Secretary of the Chautauqua County Teacher’s Association, was a member of NYSUT(New York State United Teachers) and AFT(American Federation of Teachers).  She represented teachers for 7 years at the New York State Representative Assembly, served on the school district’s negotiation team for 5 years and as president of the local school district’s Teachers Association in 1978 and 1979.  Rosemary was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Randolph Children’s Home.

After Miss Orton retired in 1994, she served as site manager in West Seneca for Meals on Wheels and fundraiser in their central office until 1999.  At this time she began her service with the Mercy Hospital Foundation where she served as director of Gift Shop volunteers, office manager and coordinator of special sales to raise funds for the hospital.  She tendered her resignation in 2007 due to an injury. 

Rosemary was an avid reader, follower of current events and traveler.  She toured extensively in the US, Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas and Hawaii.

Miss Orton is survived by one sister, Kathleen Mason of Carlsbad, CA and one brother, Joseph Orton of Westfield, NY, two nephews, Bradley King of Fredonia, NY and Mark King of Miami, Fl.  Memorial service will be held at 8:30am on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at St. Timothy Catholic Church in The Villages.  Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 1511 Buenos Aires Blvd. The Villages, Florida.  Please visit heirs-baxley.com to share words of condolence with the family.
